Hitting the cricket ball over the ropes requires a lot of skill along with power. Many players can’t even smash maximum at will. However, with the advent of shorter formats, shorter boundaries and thicker bats, we often see an abundance of sixes in cricket matches.
No matter how easy it has become to hit sixes, hitting the maximum on every ball of an over is still beyond words. There have only been multiple players in the history of the sport to achieve this feat. At the same time, only four batsmen have been able to hit six sixes in an over in international cricket.

Sir Gary Sobers: The first batsman to hit six sixes in an over
A true great of the game, legendary West Indies all-rounder Sir Gary Sobers was the first man to hit six sixes in an over. The first instance of such a meme came straight out of a Bollywood film, courtesy the end of the event.
On 31 August 1968, Sir Gary Sobers, playing in the County Championship for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan, hit Malcolm Nash for six consecutive sixes in one over.
The West Indian all-rounder took Nash to the cleaners and hit five sixes in the first five balls. But he was caught at the boundary while trying to hit a six. However, on closer scrutiny, it was found that fielder Roger Davies had touched the boundary while taking the catch. So, it resulted in another maxim and the history books were rewritten.
Ravi Shastri: The all-rounder thrashed Baroda
Former India all-rounder Ravi Shastri became the second player to hit six sixes in an over. He achieved the feat while playing a 1984–85 Ranji Trophy game for Mumbai against Baroda at the Wankhede Stadium.
In Mumbai’s second innings, Ravi Shastri came out to bat at number six and clean bowled the Baroda bowlers. The all-rounder hit an explosive double century in just 123 balls. To date, this is the fastest double century in first-class cricket.
During a record-breaking knock, Ravi Shastri hit left-arm spinner Tilak Raj for six consecutive sixes in an over to equal Sir Gay Sobers’ record.
Herschelle Gibbs: The first man to hit six sixes in an international match
Legendary South African opener Herschelle Gibbs became the first man to hit six maximum sixes in an over in an international game. He achieved the feat on 16 March 2007 during an ODI World Cup game against the Netherlands at Basseterre, West Indies.
In the 30th over of South Africa’s innings, Herschelle Gibbs took Dan van Bunge to the target. The right-handed batsman dropped the wicket in the first ball and hit a six over long-on. Meanwhile, he bowled the second and third balls over long off.
Herschelle Gibbs collected the fourth delivery at leggie over the deep midwicket fence, before dispatching the fifth delivery wide long off for another maximum. Gibbs finally created history by hitting his sixth six over deep midwicket.
Yuvraj Singh: The first man to hit six sixes in an over in T20Is
On 19 September 2007, India competed against England in a must-win game of the Super-Eight stage of the T20 World Cup in Durban. India were batting first and Yuvraj Singh came out to bat towards the end of the Indian innings.
After his arrival, English all-rounder Andrew Flintoff had a heated exchange with the Indian superstar and what followed was a complete mayhem. Right arm fast bowler Stuart Broad came to bowl the 19th over of the innings but Yuvraj Singh made a mockery of his bowling by hitting six sixes in the fast bowler’s over.
In the process, Yuvraj Singh also brought up a 12-ball fifty, the fastest fifty in international cricket across all formats. He also became the first player to hit six sixes in an over in T20I cricket and the second player to achieve the feat in international cricket.
Ross Whiteley, Hazratullah Zazai, and Leo Carter: the next to achieve the feat
England batsman Ross Whiteley was the next batsman to hit six sixes in an over. He achieved the milestone while playing for Worcestershire Rapids against Yorkshire Vikings in the 2014 T20 Blast. Spinner Carl Carver was lambasted for his record-breaking innings at Headingley.

New Zealand batsman Leo Carter was the next batsman to hit six sixes in an over. The batsman achieved the feat while playing for the Canterbury Kings against the Northern Knights. Leo Carter hit left-arm spinner Anton Dević for six sixes in one over during his explosive innings of 70 off 29 balls.
